Creatine
Research into creatine supplementation for dementia has gained significant momentum in recent years, centered on the compound’s ability to act as a metabolic energy buffer for the brain (Marshall, 2026). The brain, like skeletal muscle, relies heavily on the creatine-phosphocreatine system to maintain adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels during periods of high demand. In the context of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, where mitochondrial dysfunction and metabolic stress contribute to neuronal loss, creatine is being investigated for its neuroprotective properties (Li et al., 2026). A recent 2026 pilot study involving 20 Alzheimer’s patients found that a high daily dose (20 grams) of creatine over eight weeks led to an 11% increase in brain creatine concentration and noticeable improvements in memory, executive function, and oral reading recognition (Zourdos, 2026). While broad meta-analyses have sometimes shown equivocal results for general cognitive function in healthy adults, there is a consistent signal that benefits are most pronounced in elderly populations (aged 65+) and those under metabolic stress (Xu et al., 2024; Bottle, 2026). Despite these promising preliminary findings, researchers emphasize that larger-scale, randomized controlled trials are still needed to confirm these therapeutic effects and establish standardized dosing protocols for clinical neurodegeneration (Marshall, 2026; Li et al., 2026).
