About Rory Howerlda
I received my Chinese Medicine degree from the Southern School
of Natural therapies, completing my science modules at RMIT. I
also studied under Professor Lun Wong at the Australia College
of TCM for 4 years, and completed my certificate IV of Traditional
Chinese Massage.
I believe in the integration of both traditional and modern medical
theories. I have a very keen interest in an integrative wholistic
approach to healthcare. By utilising the strengths of each healing
modality we can provide the most effective treatment available,
without the unwanted side effects.
I also co-founded the charity Traditional Healthcare and work
closely with its development.
Herbal
medicine is used to reduce inflammation, eliminate
infectious pathogens, restore normal blood circulation, alleviate
pain, calm nerves and mind, improve immune function, strengthen
and nourish the bodies numerous systems and organs.
Herbs are usually prescribed in complex formulas of between 8
the 20 herbs, chosen from a dispensary of over 400 medicinal herbs.
Raw herbs(to be cooked at home), powdered herbs, tinctures, ready
made pills, medicated balms, liniments and concentrated formuals
designed specifically for toddlers and children are all utilized.
Acupuncture
is a key component of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Developed
over the last two millennia it is one of the oldest health practices
in the world. Modern day acupuncture utilizes sterile stainless
steel needles that are placed in specific anatomical points on
the body. The stimulation of these points elucidates a biological
response within the body, with the appropriate selection of points
the practitioner can influence biological processes, regulating
function and relieving pain.
Acupuncture is often used in conjungtion with moxabustion, which
is the application of heat over the needle to further stimulate
the channel, increase blood flow and relieve pain.
Does it hurt?
The short answer is no, except for the initial prick through the
skin. Everybody experiences the sensation differently, usually
a dull throb, numbness, 'electric like' pulse or a mild ache is
felt.
Traditonal
Chinese Massage
Massage loosens stiff muscles, inceasing blood and lymph circulation,
and reducing pain.
Therapeutic massage primarily focuses on the alleviation of specific
musculoskeletal complaints, enhanceing joint mobility, relieving
muscle spasm and alleviating pain.
Relaxation massage, as the name suggests primarily focuses on
calming the nervous system, softening muscles and relaxating the
body and mind.
Moxabustion
Moxabustion is the burning of the herb artemesia vulgaris over
specific points on the body. This stimulates the area, increasing
blood flow, reducing spasm and reducing pain. It is painless.
Cupping Therapy
Cupping invloves the application of suction cups of specific parts
of the body to increase blood flow and release toxins.
Rehabilitative stretching and strengthening
Most chronic musculoskeletal problems require stretching and strengthening
of certain muscle groups to speed up recovery time and promote
rehabilitation.
